Spring Bedroom: Coastal Grandma Style
I guess I can truly say I am a “Coastal Grandma” now that I’m actually a real Grandma living at the coast! For the past two and a half years now we’ve lived on an island on the upper NW coast of Washington state. It was always our dream to retire in a little huggable cottage by the sea. Now that we’re two years in to living our dream (although I am not retiring LOL!) I’m enjoying discovering what my “coastal grandma” style will feel like in this house!
I’ve always had a coastal feel to my style. In fact I’ve referred to it at times as Forest and Sea because we live in a part of Washington State where we are surrounded by both! It has always felt right to incorporate the organic elements of our surroundings into my home. I don’t anticipate my style changing now! But every home is unique, so while the foundation of my style remains, it is always a fun process of experimenting and discovering what details feel right in a new home!
I’m looking forward to the next phase of decorating our home. I’ll share some ideas I’m thinking about for future house projects in upcoming posts! But here a few things we’ve changed or added in our bedroom and what I’d like to do next!
New White Oak Wood Flooring
A few months ago we removed the carpet upstairs and added the same European White Oak (found at a local shop) throughout the whole house. It was a big investment all at once, but we plan to live here a long time. We love the floors! They feel classic organic and beachy– they remind us of driftwood. They are warm but also so light and cheery feeling!
I LOVE the look of the bare wood floors in a small room, but we decided to bring in this rug we already had for the end of the bed area. Our older pup Jack can easily slip and needs something to grip his feet on! It also brought together the colors of the assortment of furniture we had to work with!
Coastal Grandma Quilt + Ticking Shams
We made a little refresh to the bedding mix for spring. I love the simplicity of the ticking shams. The bolster pillow is in such a pretty fabric. I love the floral pattern! Our coverlet is from Cailini Coastal, it adds the loveliest layer of texture and subtle tone.
I recently gifted myself a grandma quilt! I have a few quilts now, but this one is my first patchwork. It just seems so cozy and homey for a family beach house. I would love to collect a whole stack of pretty quilts to display and use….all in due time.
Use What You Have
The rest of the room hasn’t changed much, other than swapping out chairs and the dresser! They went to other rooms and for now we’re using one of these striped chairs, and the gold dresser we had in our bedroom two homes ago and the living room in our last home. I’m a use what I have girl so we just swap things around as needed. You can’t overthink it, just try things!
Collect What You Love
The floral painting above our bed was an estate sale find decades ago. I firmly believe that if you collect things you love, you can almost always find the right place for it, if you give it time. And the right place can change in time, too, so I am always willing to try different pairings or a new spot! Our painting is here for now, but once we paint walls and rearrange our upstairs it might find its way to a new “right spot.”
What’s next in here?
I’m still on the lookout for a new light fixture. I bought this lantern thinking I would want it in our bedroom, but speaking of collecting what you love and finding the right place for it….the lantern never made it to our room. It found a perfect home in our entry! So now I’m waiting for “the right” light fixture for our room.
I would love to find a nice bench for the end of our bed. We have an ottoman for the dogs, but it’s not really the right size or shape.
The next thing I want to do here is to work on what we want to have on our deck! It’s a dream come true to have this porch with a view right out our bedroom. I love the chairs here, but I’m thinking about a small table, an outdoor rug and maybe even some plants. My only hesitation is not wanting anything Lily could climb up on, she’s still a daredevil! I need to look for some inspiration photos of small balconies like this. I’ll share when I find some ideas!
Happy Spring!
